Description

This course introduces basic principles of biomechanics with emphasis on musculoskeletal and orthopaedic systems. Students will initially explore musculoskeletal anatomy, muscle mechanics, and joint loading, along with dynamic movement analysis such as gait. The course will then focus on tissue mechanics of bone (primary) as well as cartilage, ligament, and tendons (secondary), highlighting their roles in health and injury. Biomaterials and their applications in orthopaedic interventions—including joint replacement, fracture fixation, and implant design—will be examined. By combining anatomical knowledge with mechanical principles, the course prepares students to analyze normal and pathological musculoskeletal systems and develop solutions for clinical and engineering challenges.

Prerequisite(s): ME314 (Taken); ME323 (Taken)
Restriction(s): Restricted to Mechanical Engineering students in Years 3 and 4. Students may receive credit for only one of ME 454 or ME 806.
